Watchdog

Watchdog (www.watchdog.net.nz) was founded in 1999 as a specialist in Internet safety and, in particular, the provision of web content filtering services previously unavailable in NZ.

Since that time, Watchdog has provided Internet filtering and connectivity services to a wide range of home, business and school customers and, in the process, introduced a number of important technical innovations in tunnelling, email filtering, etc (for example, Watchdog was the first ISP to introduce email filtering in NZ).

In 2004, Watchdog's leadership in web content filtering was recognised with the awarding of a contract from the Ministry of Education whereby Watchdog is funded to provide web and email filtering as well as hardware firewall services to state and integrated school. Almost 1200 schools are now using Watchdog services, equating to every second school throughout the country! Watchdog is also funded by the Ministry of Economic Development (through the 2020 Communications Trust) to provide thousands of low socio-economic homes with filtered Internet connections (through the "Computers in Homes" programme).

Since 2006, Watchdog has also been offering services internationally, most notably in the specialist field of the prevention of Internet-based child sexual abuse imagery (CSAI) and culminating in the first international sale in mid 2008 to the United Kingdom. Considerable further business is anticipated globally as governments around the world grapple with the criminal problem of CSAI.

Latterly, Watchdog has also been appointed as Google's preferred partner and reseller for the NZ education sector. Based on Google's impressive and growing array of online applications (such as Google Docs, Gmail, Google Video and a suite of filtering solutions), Watchdog now provides solutions and support to NZ schools and is exploring offshore opportunities as well.
